The Racquet
Club of Memphis is a large private facility that supports the USTA and other
growth-of-the-game programs open to the public. It was built in 1974 at a cost
of $10 million, paid for in cash by Dunavant Enterprises Inc. Today, The
Racquet Club has over 1500 memberships (more than 3500 members) and is supported
by approximately $8.5 million in sales each year.
The Racquet Club, which was
the 1981 Tennessee Tennis Association Club of the Year and the 1982 USTA
Regional Organization of the Year, has reciprocity with over 200 clubs
worldwide. Each year members from reciprocal clubs all over the world visit The
Racquet Club to enjoy the great tennis and the great family atmosphere here at
our club. The Racquet Club is a facility that truly is connected globally,
nationally, and locally.
In the 29 years that The
Racquet Club has been in existence, our walls have changed many times. In 1976,
5 courts, H, I, J, K & L, were added to The Racquet Club. In 1979, the four
glass-backed racquetball courts were added behind courts E, F & G. In 1984, the
500-seat Center Court Ballroom was added as well as the Dunavant Room, an audio
visual room created specifically for important business meetings. Also in 1984,
the 22 executive suites were added, the first suites in the entire world built
exclusively for tennis viewing. These luxury suites, built for the ATP Tour’s
Championship level tournament at The Racquet Club in February, were the
beginning of a trend in the tennis world. No stadium today would be built
without them. In 1993, the Fitness Center along with a multi-purpose activity
room (The Oak Room) were added to The Racquet Club, and are one of the most
popular areas of the club. The following year the Wellness Center, which was
designed for physicians to do physicals and physical therapy, was added next to
the Fitness Center. In 1999, the pool was renovated and in 2001, the snack bar
was moved downstairs to a wonderful location by the pool. Also that year a new
office was constructed for the General Manager and four new meeting rooms were
created as a result. In 2002, the Galleria was converted to a private room
which is also used as the players’ lounge during the ATP and WTA tennis event.
Our latest major renovation was this year, when we sealed in an overlook in the
Galleria to allow for more floor space for all of our functions at The Racquet
Club.
We are always growing and
expanding in everything that we do, working to improve on a Club that enjoys a
reputation as one of the best in the nation.
