Kindermusik by Paula
Beginning in January, 2006, the Racquet Club of Memphis will offer
a new musical learning program for all families with children ages
newborn and up—Family Time. The new curriculum, created by
Kindermusik, is designed to apply musical and developmental
learning in a multi-age, multi-child, family environment.
Paula DeStefanis, a licensed Kindermusik Educator, will be
teaching the program created exclusively for Kindermusik by a team
of music and child development experts. In a “one room
schoolhouse” environment, Family Time helps children develop
musical skills, as well as the social skills necessary to share,
take turns, and strengthen the emotional bond among family
members.
“This is a great way for parents with children of various ages to
spend time together, doing one activity as a family,” says Paula.
“The little ones watch the older ones, and learn from them.” “We
are in the business of changing the world one child at a time.”
Kindermusik International is the world’s leading publisher of
music and movement curricula for parents and their children, ages
newborn to 7 years old. Research shows that using multiple senses
helps the brain learn about rhythm – how we move indeed influences
what we hear. It probably doesn’t matter if you listen to Mozart
or a rock band or jazz. All those kinds of music and concurrent
rhythms go to wire up the brain.”
The Family Time class includes ten, 45 minute classes, and a set
of At Home Materials. The integrated materials feature two
children’s books, two instruments, two CDs of songs and activities
from class, one family activity book, as well as two puppets that
are featured characters in the class. This class will be in
addition to the ongoing classes that are offered weekly by age
appropriate units: Village (newborn – 18 mos.) and Our Time (18
mos. – age 3)

Boot Camp
with Sharon Rekita (405-7753)
Confessions of a Boot Camp Drill Sergeant
What would motivate twenty-five adults to rise near dawn two days
a week and assemble outdoors, half-dressed (strictly for comfort
reasons), for an hour of hill running, energy sprints, military
drills, and creative calisthenics under the watchful eye of
a trainer wearing an all too shrill whistle? The answer is simple:
the promise of fast fitness results. Dropping a clothing size or
two is the most obvious reward of sweating through a six-week
session while also gaining strength, endurance, agility, and newly
defined muscles. New recruits quickly learn that exercising with
others provides a healthy dose of social support and camaraderie.
Campmates cheer beginners on, give fellow Troopers pats on the
back for good efforts and provide enough jokes and smart-aleck
remarks to make that last pushup or 8-count a little easier. “If
they can do it, I can do it!” Athletes in
other disciplines,
such as marathon running, swimming, or weight training, find Dr.
Rock’s versatile regime challenging as they learn other moves and
strengthen other muscle groups. Others realize that working out
under the leadership of Sharon Rekieta, aka Dr. Rock--a motivating
taskmaster who earns the respect of her loyal followers--almost
guarantees the receipt of numerous physical and psychological
benefits. For some campers, however, just completing a boot
camp is the greatest accomplishment of all. This is especially
true for the over-forty set who can proudly shout out, "I've still
got it,” or maybe they find it along the way. If you’re
stalling, procrastinating, or just not doing enough exercise, hot
step it over to the Racquet Club and join in as the Troopers
chant:
Boot Camp
sessions are the best.
We look forward
to the test.
We could exercise all day.
Working hard is just like play.
1, 2, Can I do
it?
3, 4, Yes! I knew it!
5, 6, Let’s get through it!
7, 8, Nothing to it!
