What is Pilates?
Pilates is
a system of body conditioning designed over 70 years ago by Joseph Pilates
to develop strength and flexibility. The primary focus in Pilates is
on the abdomen, lower back, and buttocks, which comprise the core
(power-house) of the body and the benefits are plentiful:
Improved posture
enabling you to walk, sit and stand taller
Improved muscular
strength, tone and endurance
Improved
suppleness and joint mobility
Injury prevention
Improved body
awareness
Increased energy
levels
Effective body
mechanics
Improved
abdominal strength
Over 500
specific exercises emphasize control, precision and concentration in both
the mind and the body. Mat work and the use of specifically invented
apparatus by Joseph Pilates work to center and strengthen the body as a
whole. The exercises are low-impact, using the abdominal as the source
of strength for the entire body. Pilates is ideal for injury
prevention or rehabilitation. Emphasis is on body awareness,
controlling body alignment, and correct breathing through concentration to
promote efficient movement. The result is a strong, defined body with
muscles that are lengthened and toned. You will notice the difference
and feel the difference through the process of the recommended 2-3 sessions
per week.
Who benefits from Pilates?
The Pilates method is for everyone!
Clients range in age from 18 to 80, both male and female, from housewife to
professional athletes. Pilates is wonderful for sports enthusiasts,
improving your range of motion for golf, cycling, running, tennis,
basketball, dancing and racquetball. Authentic Pilates instructors are
trained to assist clients with their specific physical needs, as each
private session is catered to the individual. Group classes focus on
the mat work. Since the exercises are low impact, it is ideal for
